How do ships increase fuel efficiency?

The Norwegian School of Economics Professor Roar Adland researched that cleaning the ship’s hull while in the dry dock could boost total ship efficiency by up to 17%. Up to 9% more fuel can be saved by periodically cleaning the hull underwater between dry dockings, if necessary.
