Is it mandatory to carry an AIS?

According to the regulation, AIS must be installed on all ships with a gross tonnage of 300 or more that are engaged in international travel, on all cargo ships with a gross tonnage of 500 or more that are not engaged in international travel, and all passenger ships, regardless of size.
