What distinguishes a ATG and a SATCOM?

The term “air-to-ground” (ATG) refers to a link between an aircraft and ground-based towers that provides a data or internet connection between the aircraft and tower. These towers are often ground-based communication towers, such as cellular towers.

The internet connection between an aircraft and satellites is made possible by a connection known as SATCOM. The information is transmitted from the plane to the satellite, then down to a ground station, and back again.
