What is an echo sounders on a ship?

Echo sounders on a ship use the idea of acoustic energy reflection to determine the depth of water by measuring the time it takes for a pulse of energy to travel to the sea bed and return. Sound energy is transferred vertically down from the ship in a short pulse.
