What is depth in ECDIS?

Mariners can define their own ship’s “safety depth” using ECDIS. The value is set to 30m by ECDIS if no depth is specified. Deeper soundings are displayed in a less obvious grey; those equal to or more profound than the safety depth are shown in black.
