Since the horizontal range of AIS signals is only about 40 nautical miles (74 km), AIS traffic data is only accessible in coastal areas or ship-to-ship zones. Two VHF frequencies, 161.975 MHz and 162.025 MHz, with a bandwidth of 25 kHz, are used for AIS transmission.
