What is the primary purpose of SART?

An electronic gadget called a Search, and Rescue Transponder (SART) responds instantly to the radar signal. This improves visibility on a radar display. SART transponders facilitate the search for a liferaft or a ship in distress. Up to 500 tonne GMDSS vessels must have at least one SART on board.
