Why does HF travel further than VHF?

Only a line of sight between a sending and receiving antenna will allow VHF waves to function. They are, therefore, most effective over short and medium distances. On the other hand, HF radio waves are reflected off the ionosphere. This significantly extends their range, making them appropriate for farther distances.
