Russian Navy Expands Kalibr Missile Ships in Black Sea

Kyiv time, April 23 – Ukrainian Naval Forces have reported a significant uptick in Russian naval activity in the Black Sea, noting the presence of two missile-carrying ships this morning. The Kalibr cruise missiles on these ships can fire 12 rockets. This marks a notable increase from the previous day when only one such vessel was observed.

Increased Missile Threat in the Black Sea

As of 06:00 AM Kyiv time, the Ukrainian military confirmed the heightened threat level in the Black Sea due to the deployment of these missile carriers. This development signals a potential escalation in regional tensions. In contrast, no Russian naval vessels were detected in the Sea of Azov.

Russian Naval Presence in the Mediterranean

Further reports indicate three Russian naval ships are stationed in the Mediterranean Sea. Among them, two are armed with Kalibr cruise missiles, contributing to a combined potential salvo of 12 missiles. The strategic positioning of these vessels raises continued concerns about potential missile threats across the region.

Maritime Movements Through the Kerch Strait

Ukrainian naval authorities also detailed the maritime traffic through the Kerch Strait over the past 24 hours. According to their observations:

  • To the Black Sea: Four ships passed, three of which continued towards the Bosporus Strait.
  • To the Sea of Azov: 5 ships, 3 of which continued towards the Bosporus Strait.

These movements suggest ongoing logistical and operational activity by the Russian Navy.

Violation of International Maritime Law

Along with sending more troops, the Ukrainian Navy slammed Russia for breaking the 1974 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The violation involves the repeated disabling of automatic identification systems (AIS) on Russian vessels, thereby concealing their locations and movements, a serious breach of international maritime safety standards.

Pattern of Russian Naval Activity

For the past several days, Russian activity in the Black Sea has typically included the presence of a single missile carrier, usually armed with up to six Kalibr missiles. However, the current escalation could signal a shift in naval strategy or preparation for further military actions.

The last known Kalibr missile strike by Russian forces occurred on April 6, targeting Kyiv, its surrounding areas, and regions in southern Ukraine.

Ongoing Monitoring and Preparedness

The Ukrainian Navy monitors the situation closely, issuing regular updates to ensure regional preparedness and maritime security. The increase in Russian missile-capable vessels highlights the need for vigilance and international attention to regional naval developments.
