A big step forward was achieved when the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) KF-21 Boramae fighter jet did its first air-to-air refueling at night. The test involved the fourth prototype, a twin-seat variant within the six-aircraft testing program, as highlighted in a video released by South Korea’s Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA).
The footage shows the KF-21 making multiple contacts with the boom of a Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) Airbus A330 Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT), starting at dusk. The jet’s formation light strips are visible in one segment, emphasizing the low-visibility conditions. While DAPA did not disclose the date, location, or fuel transferred, the successful contacts marked a significant step in validating the aircraft’s operational capabilities.
The KF-21 test fleet has made steady progress since its first flight in July 2022, with over 1,100 missions. This nighttime refueling follows the fifth prototype’s daytime refueling test in early 2024 with a ROKAF MRTT. Powered by twin General Electric F414 engines, the KF-21 blends advanced avionics and 4.5-generation technology. KAI began mass production in mid-2024, with the first production jet slated for ROKAF service by late 2026. This milestone reinforces the KF-21’s role in enhancing South Korea’s air defense and its potential in global markets.
