As an immediate measure, the air traffic control (ATC) officer on duty during the incident was temporarily removed from the roster pending further investigation.

Aviation veteran Captain Shakti Lumba said the aircraft were far away despite the video’s perspective. Lumba noticed that the planes appeared close but far away since the clip was captured at an angle (perhaps near the hutments next to runway 27’s threshold) extreme runway operations. India follows when visibility is 3 km and the tailwind is less than 5 km.

A spokesperson for Air India said AI657 from Mumbai to Trivandrum took off on June 8. Air India took off when Air Traffic Control allowed it to come in. The Air India plane took off as planned. Authorities are probing airline clearance.

The ATC Guild’s statement highlighted that tower controllers are permitted to reduce separation minima between two aircraft if they have established reasonable assurance by visually confirming the positions of both aircraft. The runway is already over-congested, handling over 1,000 flights daily, making it prone to risks.

Deora’s views emphasize the necessity for solid risk mitigation methods to operate Mumbai’s congested airspace safely and efficiently.
