SGP: A Brief Historical Overview
SGP’s impressive journey began in 2012 when direct negotiations were held between SGP (PIF & PSA) and MAWANI to oversee a second container terminal in King Abdulaziz Port. The laying of the foundation in 2013 set the stage for this ambitious project, and by 2014, SGP had received Quay Cranes (QCs) and Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes (RTGs) for testing and training.
As evidence of its competence in managing port operations effectively, SGP began its commercial activities in 2015. Reaching a vessel rate (VR) of 150 moves per hour was a significant accomplishment for the SGP team in 2016. The accomplishment resulted from the hard work and efficiency of the SGP staff.
Moving forward, SGP purchased and deployed eight additional RTGs in 2017 to support Dammam – Riyadh Railway Operations. By 2018, SGP had handled its one millionth Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) container, further cementing its reputation as a reliable and efficient port operator.

Assuming all expansion plans go according to plan, the port should be able to handle 7.5 million TEUs per year once the expansion is finish.
